A Plea to Other Bloggers

I come from a long line of grammarians and editors. Then I married a journalist, with whom I produced an English teacher and a mass communications major.

Given that background, please understand I may stop following your blog if you repeatedly us “it’s” as a possessive or you make other usage errors that you should have learned by the tenth grade.

Here’s a brief refresher of some common usage errors:

it’s—it is

you’re—you are

they’re—they are

flaunt—show off something

flout—flagrantly disobey a rule

forgo—to go without

forego—to go before

forward—a direction

foreword—introduction to a book

staunch–fervent, like a supporter

stanch–stem the flow, as blood

There are many more, but I have to get back to painting baseboard.

One more thing: if you learned to type on an actual typewriter you were probably taught to put two spaces after a period. Ever since the advent of computer word-processing and typesetting, it is no longer necessary to do so;  the computer automatically adds extra space after a period. Adding the extra space creates “rivers”  in the copy, and drives me crazy.

And if you ever catch me in a usage or grammar error, feel free to call me on it. I too am subject to human error.
